Patient’s Guide to Same-Day Crowns

by

What is the procedure for a same-day crown, and how long does it take?

The procedure for a same-day crown is a streamlined process that utilizes advanced technology to create and place a dental crown in just one visit, typically taking about two hours. This is a significant advancement compared to traditional crowns, which require at least two visits over a couple of weeks. Here’s an overview of the same-day crown procedure:

1. Initial Examination and Preparation:

The dentist begins with a thorough examination of the tooth that needs the crown. This may involve taking digital X-rays. If the tooth is suitable for a same-day crown, the dentist prepares it by removing any decay and reshaping it to fit the crown. This step is similar to the preparation for a traditional crown.

2. Digital Impressions:

Instead of using traditional dental putty to create an impression of your tooth, the dentist uses a digital scanner. This device captures a highly accurate 3D image of your tooth and the surrounding teeth. This digital impression is more comfortable for the patient, as it eliminates the need for a physical mold.

3. Crown Design and Fabrication:

The digital impression is then used to design the crown using specialized computer software. This software allows the dentist to customize the shape and size of the crown to precisely fit your tooth and bite. Once the design is finalized, the information is sent to an in-office milling machine. This machine carves the crown from a block of ceramic or porcelain, matching the color of your natural teeth. The fabrication process typically takes about 15 to 30 minutes.

4. Placement and Adjustment:

Once the crown is milled, the dentist checks the fit and color of the crown, making any necessary adjustments. The crown is then polished and bonded to your tooth. This step ensures that the crown fits comfortably and looks natural.

5. Final Checks and Instructions:

After the crown is securely in place, the dentist will make any final adjustments to ensure a proper bite alignment. You’ll receive instructions on how to care for your new crown, including good oral hygiene practices and foods to avoid in the initial period.

The entire process, from preparation to placement, usually takes about two hours, though this can vary slightly depending on the specific circumstances of each case. Same-day crowns eliminate the need for temporary crowns and multiple dental visits, offering a convenient and efficient solution for patients needing dental crowns.
